Honey is a healthy and natural sweetener that is replacing sugar as an ingredient in cooking and baking. It’s already a popular sweetener for beverages but it is also used in alcoholic drinks too. Substitute honey in your cocktails for a healthy twist. Honey cocktails offer a unique flavor that will leave your taste buds asking why you ever used anything else!

Honey Cocktails are Not a New Thing

Since the Prohibition era began in 1920, honey was used as an ingredient in alcohol. Since alcohol was illegal during that period, people made their own at home called moonshine. The resulting alcohol was hard to consume because of its bad quality and taste. Adding honey allowed the alcohol to be more pleasant in flavor, making it ‘drinkable’.

Since the 1980s, bartenders have readapted the process of adding honey to their cocktails. They add honey not to mask the unpleasant taste of bad quality booze but used to create unique and exotic honey cocktails.

Bartenders understand the science behind each drink and how each ingredient mixes with each other. The process of using honey in cocktails compared to honey in tea or other hot beverages is temperature. Honey can’t easily dissolved in cold beverages because of its thick texture, nor will it mix with the rest of the ingredients. Bartenders avoid this inconvenience by always having honey syrup readily available to use. Making honey syrup is easy to make and store.

Honey Syrup Recipe

When making honey syrup, remember the ratio is 1:3. You’ll need to mix 3 parts honey with 1 part water in warm water. The hotter the temperature, the easier it will mix. You can also opt for a faster process by boiling the ingredients in a pot for a quick minute. Be careful not to exceed 96° F/36° C or you’ll start to lose the aromas of the honey. After your syrup has cooled off, you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Easy right?!

So now that you know how to make honey syrup, let’s move forward with these easy and yummy honey cocktails.
