National Dog Day is on August 26th, so get ready to pamper your pup and show them you appreciate all their unconditional love! Best way to spoil your dog is to make them delicious homemade, peanut butter and honey dog treats. These healthy dog treats are perfect for training or rewarding good behavior. But for me, it’s to make my fur-baby happy and to spoil her silly! My dog is so awesome and brings my family so much joy, she deserves yummy dog treats all the time!

Not only do these peanut butter and honey dog treats taste good, but they are good for you too! All ingredients are human grade so we make two batches, one for the hooman child and one for the dog child LOL. Yes, they are edible for humans too!

Peanut Butter & Honey Dog Treats are Healthy

Peanut butter is packed with protein, healthy fats and low content in cholesterol. It also tastes great with bananas and honey. It is important to look for peanut butter that contains zero sugar, salts and xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar replacement and can be poisonous for dogs!

Bananas are healthy a healthy treat in it of itself and contains a lot of nutritional benefits. While the nutrients in a banana are actually more beneficial to humans than dogs, they are a tasty and nutritious treat for pups. They are high in potassium, vitamins, biotin, fiber, copper and are low in cholesterol. But because of its high sugar content, bananas should be given only as a treat as part of a complete and balanced diet.

Whole wheat flour is one of the healthiest choices for honey dog treats as it’s not processed and is rich in fiber, trace minerals, protein and vitamins B. As long as your dog is not allergic to grain, it's perfectly safe for them. In fact, one of the reasons dogs evolved alongside humans was their ability to digest starch. But always introduce new foods to your dog in moderation. You may want to substitute whole wheat flour for gluten free options, such as brown rice flour, chickpea, sorghum or oat flour.

Another healthy ingredient is honey. Honey is used for its amazing benefits for our little friends. Honey can help with skin allergies, digestion problems, promote proper liver and intestinal function. They also enhances your dogs’ stamina making them tireless little monsters. My dog loves honey more than anything else!

Directions

First, mash the banana with a fork. Then prepare 1 of your 2 eggs by separating the white and putting it aside for later. You’ll need this white to coat your peanut butter and honey dog treats before baking them. It is optional as some dogs are allergic to eggs.

Next, mix the rest the ingredients except the whole wheat flour, in a large bowl for about 3 minutes. Then add the whole wheat flour and mix it together until it becomes a dough. Please note that whole wheat flour can be substituted with brown rice flour, chickpea, sorghum or oat flour.

Then use a rolling pin to flatten the dough on a flat surface, until it reaches the recommended height of 0.2 inches or ½ cm. Start shaping your dough into your desired shape of treats. You can either use your hands or cookie cutters. Place your biscuits carefully on a non-stick tray or on top of parchment paper, one that is suitable for the oven.

Preheat the oven at 150 degrees. While waiting, brush to coat of the egg whites on top of all your biscuits. This will give your cookies a right shine once it’s ready to eat. Put them babies in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. Remember to watch it and not let it burn. Once it’s ready, let it cool for 5 minutes to ensure they won’t burn your little fur-balls. To store them, put them in an airtight container and remember to refrigerate.

Give this super easy recipe a try! These peanut butter and honey dog treats will ensure your fur-baby is eating healthy, handmade snacks. It’s also the perfect way to show your dog just how much you love them on National Dog Day!
